Small rust spots (white paint area)

 ·

hi all,

Looking for some advice on how best to attack & treat rust spots ? They are literally surface areas of less than .5cm squared - but I'd rather be on top of it! they are on the cab and so are in white paint areas..

I've researched a tonne of products.. but haven't found one that really stands out - has anyone done something similar/can recommend a product? Also - should I sand back the area around it etc?

Any help much appreciated!

Only one way to get rid of rust and that is too remove it, it's only a bubble then sand it back to bare metal, treat and repaint. Remove all traces of rust.

i have the same problem. again, just small parts, but in akward places like edges and corners.
Ended up getting a mates mate to give me a price on cleaning them up and spraying them, 200 euro.
thats for spraying the underside of the top cabin, right down to the sills.
thought it was a bit stiff, but it will be tidier, and rust is a b*tch.

Cheers Ally,

When you say remove it - does that count the paint products like rustbullet etc that claim they remove and re-seal?!

Only time I have used a product was after bringing it back to bare metal and applying a product to protect it from further rusting. So remove it with sandpaper. Blag is your man though, he has some history on it :)

Everything said is correct.
On older vans, mine included, surface rust becomes apparent and treatment is an ongoing issue. Sanding back, removal of rust area and treating accordingly and then refinishing it again is really the only answer.

If it is really that small a spot, do your best to scrape any of the rust to bare metal, treat it with Krust or something similar and paint it with a touch up primer, paint and lacquer. Halfords do handy touch up kits it you can match the colour.

Cheers for the responses guys... will have a go at it anyway. have to re-do the CVRT soon.. (FML) don't expect these to be an issue -but important for overall upkeep anyway! this van's gotta last a life time :P

200 Euro sounds pretty reasonable for that amount of work to be honest. That should tidy the van up very nicely getting it sprayed that way rather than just touching in small areas.
