Purchased a Glomex Horizon...

Details here:

https://shopuk.glomex.it/en/di…-diam.html

Got it direct from Glomex in Italy for £139, it seems to be RRP £310, reduced to £259 on some sites. So seem to have a got a good deal, half price :)

It has electric Motors and moves via remote control from inside the van. Probably not that much different than a manual Status but it boosts some pretty impressive specs and I love trying new technology. Most of the specs I don't understand but they look good.

Expect delivery on Friday so I'll post more then and do a report as I go along.

---------------------

Horizon is a directional TV antenna about 3 times more efficient when compared to an omnidirectional antenna, allowing a gain of up to 36 dB.

It is comfortably directed by means of the infrared remote control, which activates the internal electric motors and finds the receiving angle with the smallest interference by the reflected signals generated by natural obstacles (mountains, trees, buildings, etc). The quality of the signal received also depends on the presence of two amplifiers: one inside the antenna and the other, provided with by-pass, installed on the vehicle (wall- or dashboardmounting provided). Amplifiers allow adjusting the intensity of the signal received and, if strong signals are present, the by-pass option deactivates amplification and directly transmits to the TV set without disturbing receipt. The amplifier is provided with a further input to connect a DVD reader or another antenna, by using a single wiring on the vehicle. Horizon is provided with a support for roof installation with screws or glue (T198), 5 m coaxial cable, TV cable, amplifier and remote control.

SUPPLIED ACCESSORIES:

5 M (16,4') COAXIAL CABLE to connect the antenna with the amplifier

1,5 M (5') COAXIAL CABLE to connect the amplifier to the TV / Decoder

Doesn't let me install the APP, must be because of UK IP, I'll fool it later :)

It arrived.

It is refurbished but done by Glomex and sold by Glomex with a full warranty. But not so good so far......... it arrived without it's remote control and I contacted them. They apologised and then informed me I also have the wrong amplifier :-/

What happened there I don't know, but they are sending both replacement parts today.

Quite small, I stuck a pen in the box to give you a better idea of it's size.

That's not a substitute for a Dish, it's just a TV Antenna, Right???

Yeah just a TV Antenna. Directional with electric motors.

All the bits arrived and I fitted it on Friday.

Because some of the bits arrived late it was confusing how I would screw on the satellite type connector to the Antenna as it is quite far into the stem. But after scratching my head for a while I realised, in with the new bits is a tool included with it just for that.

I had the Milenco power antenna on and opted for it being stuck on only, less holes the better right? - only one hole then for the coax down through the roof. The stem for the Glomex is different, the coax is meant to come out the side of it and there is a opening that releases (see pic below) and then refits again with the coax protruding. I didn't like this, so I drilled a hole at the bottom of the stem so the coax could go straight through the stem/mount and could then be sealed along with sealing/sticking the stem/mount on the roof.

Cleaned the roof for adhesion, but this pic was taken before the rest of the roof was clean, marks are where the original Milenco 900 was.

The interior amplifier controls the gain and the gain can be bypassed if the signal is very strong.

There is a remote control with it for moving the aerial and they provide a small IR eye with a lonmg lead for you to position where you need it, I stuck it just above the cupboard.

Switched it on and it worked - phew ;)

Had a bit of a play with it at the weekend and so far it picked up all available channels no matter where I drove, but I didn't go far and Antrim has a good signal so will require some testing over the next few months.

Everytime I done a channel scan it picked up the channels, I tested signal strength & quality and then moved the antenna until they increased.

So far so good......................

Would be intersting to know if it picks up both Horizontal & Vertical channels at the same time. :-)

The last time we were at Lumpers we had no signal at all with our Milenco. This time we had all channels with new antenna :)

They broke up now and again but a huge improvement.

At Carlingford Marina the first night we had all channels, both UK & ROI. Second night we parked in a different spot and it was a bit hit & miss, although ROI channels were great. We were backed onto a cliff so that might of been it.

More testing later.....

Looks good Ally. I like that piece. On a side note what did you use to:
1: remove old silicone
2:prep the surface for new silisone
3: What type of silicone did you use. Wurth Bond and Seal?

Thanks

1. Peeled it off and cleaned it up with WD40
2. Cleaned with WD40
3. I always used Sikaflex adhesive and sealer, but this stuff, in the pic, was recommended to me. It seems easier to work with and just as strong as sikaflex.

Had this a few months now. It's been pretty good, a lot better than the Milenco 900 and it seems to be better than the Status aerials.

I get TV where others don't.

One complaint would be the fact that you have no way of knowing if you have signal or not, the Status aerials have a light once you find a signal, this doesn't. But in it's defence it has pretty much worked always on first arrival with no adjustment.

Usually a case of tuning the TV in when you arrive, find signal strength and adjust the antenna with the remote until a good strong signal and quality and then retune TV

A quick lesson for me on Gain.

Arrived in a campsite in Derry, couldn't get any TV channels :(

Been having great results with the aerial so was surprised. Remembered about the gain control, turned it right off as we are very close to a mast.

All channels appeared :)

So if you receive nothing, give your Gain a fiddle :)

What is 'gain control, please?
I have a Glomex satellite dish on roof, but found when transporters changed I would find it very difficult to download the new software, so to be honest it is just sitting idle on the roof until I g.et around to getting it seen to in say Thomson or elsewhere.
When in Irl I just use the Saorview with fair success.

There is no Gain control on satellite. It is for terrestrial TV aerials.

Simon at LTS would be a good first call to sort your updates on the dish software. He is an advertiser on this site do it would do no harm to mention motorhome craic if you call.

Forgot about this and thought I better come back to it.

The Glomex seemed better than the Milenco for along while, until I realised what had happened to the Milenco. If you read HERE I thought there was something wrong with the Milenco 900, it turned out to be faulty wiring which I didn't immediately catch onto as I put the glomex in a different place.

The Glomex is ok, still working and still getting a picture, but a PITAQ to use, it needs a signal finder of some description built in.

I would go back to the milenco in a heartbeat.
