If we have any members who are also members of either of the big two caravan clubs, we should be urging them to write to their clubs with a view to having this published. Even going as far as boycotting all commercial sites within a given radius of Cobh.

I wish they would all stop using the term "caravan" owners...........it has nothing to do with caravans,

Backward Ireland at its best.
Monopolies trying to strangle initiative..... no wonder France is where lots of us choose to spend our money.
Let's hope they don't try and ban us from using ferries.

Uk is the same ,I spend my cash in europe just back from a 5 week trip in France ,Germany ,Luxembourg and Belgium and you don't have these problems there .I did note that a couple of the places i stopped in France the services had been partly funded by the french motorhome clubs (maybe an option over here ).Did notice it was busier with vans than i have ever seen it (pic of Honfluer ) but funny enough on my 5 hour run up to Manchester on my return i didn't see any vans .(maybe they were all parked on caravan sites :'( )

So many things wrong with that article that it's extremely misleading, I had to check it was not on a Sattire website.

Bit of a storm in a tea cup, "threatening?" "put the fear of god into me" - seriously?

From what I can see and think is right, they haven't a leg to stand on if the council stand up for their decision to make a it a motorhome parking area.

I was going to ask do we know who these Campsite owners are that are objecting, then I said that I would put myself in their shoes and what is the first thing I would do to know what was going on with motorhomers? Yes I would or get one of my family or friends to be a subscribed member in Motorhomecraic.
So if any of ye are logged on, would ye ever cop yourselves on, the People parking in Cobh from all over Ireland and Europe are there for the scenery, the History and Culture. They will NEVER come to your Campsites and if you continue your petty protest you will get the back up of every Motorhomer in the site and every Business person in Cobh.
As a Business man myself I understand income can be tight, I went through it myself but found the way forward was to listen to my customers demands and then diversify and supply those demands and in some cases you might not be able and maybe you should be planting Potato's on the site. You have to move with times, no point in flogging a Dead Horse.

"Campsite owners from all over Ireland"???
I really don't understand how campsite owners feel that Aires undermine their business model. I have now met 3 or 4 owners of campsites in Ireland who also own a motorhome perhaps like myself they realise that whatever they do will still not make a person who wants to wild camp or stay in Aires use a campsite. It's not just about the cost it's also about freedom and the ability to stay where they want and not be subject to the rules of a campsite whether the rules are written or un written.
It's true I would not want an aire next to me not because I'd be worried about losing business I'd be more worried about aire users using some of my facilities without paying. That said I'm more than happy to share suitable wild camping spots close but not right next to my campsite.

One of vans staying on my site now has been wild camping for a while and they now want to hook up and charge their batteries have a long shower with plenty of room and get rid of their waste. I'm more than happy with this.

In order to get more tourists in Ireland, Ireland has to provide the facilities the tourists want, need or expect.

I was in Cobh Tues and Weds nights. About 8 MH parked each night. Hopefully local business will convince the councillors to push back hard on this nonsense.

What's your view Colin?

Last sting of a dying wasp comes to mind.

Are these guys going to take on Louth Co.Co. (Carrickmacross), Mayo Co.Co. (Crossmolina), Cavan Co.Co. (who allow overnight parking in their carparks), Galway Harbour Company, Waterways Ireland (Portumna) to name a few of the parking places provided by councils and semi state bodies and all the private providers (the hotels, marinas, pubs, etc).

Then there are all the area provided by the councils in NI and the UK, not to mention the 15,000 plus elsewhere in Europe which are part of the landscape.

Perhaps it's about time the campsite owners realised there is another offering to be provided and provide simple overnight parking on or adjacent to their premises priced accordingly and also allow access to services to passing motorhome based tourists like is provided in Europe for a charge of €3/€5, but then how many have drive over grey water disposal grids in place, I've been on many campsites here in Ireland which don't.

I for one don't normally want or need their EHU, children's play areas, camper's kitchens, TV rooms or shower/toilet blocks unless I've the grandchildren with me and then all I really need is the children's play area.

The actions of the site owners is akin to a restaurateur complaining about a coffee shop being set up, different market segments, different clientele.

Hi Colin I think you have the nail on the head, different market different clientele.
I am surprised that "Some" campsite don't understand this.
Many of the walkers, hikers, bikers who stay on my site might also decide to chose a B&B, hostel so I suppose I could be annoyed if a good value hostel were to be set up very close to me. I won't get annoyed though as it comes down to customer choice. All I can do is make my offering as appealing as possible.
The report is probably a storm in a tea cup. But there does seem to be an ongoing story here of campsite owners being against wild camping and Aires, their loss really.
When I look at my charge to stay for circa 24 hours, use all my facilities etc against charging €3-5 to service then it's a quicker and easier profit.
Especially as there is a general lack of the facilities for MH following the WAW in Clare.

Not only campsite owners, some Motorhome Clubs, although not actively blocking them, do not promote Aire's and Motorhome Parking.

An excellent piece of PR from the Phoenix club. We also need to keep banging the drum for camp sites to provide a similar service in terms of provision and price to make them see that they can make a few euros as well for almost no effort.

I've had a number of conversations with Duncan Evans in the past. Following has recent enquiry we sent him links to recent media coverage and updated him with the latest situation.

The piece in O&AL is his work, drawing from info forwarded to him, and is expected to be included in an upcoming edition of MMM

Great article.

It is the truth

Do we know who these Camp Site owners are?
I don't know about the rest of ye, I certainly will not be using their sites if I find out who they are, Infact I think they should be removed from all Motorhome parking apps here in Ireland and across Europe or at least highlight their behaviour towards Motorhomers in reviews of their sites. It is not fair to boycott all of the sites within a given radius of Cobh because there are many excellent Site owners out there that I will continue to support who are giving excellent service and deserve our support.

Two can play their Game!

Thanks Colin for the info.

The challenges to Cobh Aire have been brought before the appropriate people and the decision has been made that they are adopting the byelaws of the Aire and that it is staying.
