Being a bit pedantic, but the title of this thread is a bit of a contradiction ^_^

Aire de Service is a service area or bay, a place where services are provided and on which you may not park/stop, except while emptying grey and/or black water and taking on fresh water.
Sometimes such 'Aires' can be found at service stations and at supermarkets where they are often separate from the parking area.

However,

Aire de Stationnement is a parking area (stop-over), a place where parking is provided and which may or may not include an Aire de Service.

Motorhome Service Area

And

Motorhomer Parking area.

I think this should have been introduced when the first people lobbied for motorhome parking in Ireland. We could be stuck with the French terminology now.

Just back from the west of Ireland and most villages have "AIRE" signs; especially before a school. It means care/ attention in gaelic.

When there were no Aires de Service or Stopovers outside mainland Europe it was extremely difficult to get anyone to listen to what I was trying to do, Stellplatz and Aires were the two names already in use and as the Raclet brochures were French and about Aires I went with that and after three years of trying,I managed to get the Village Association to spend their money and fit one on their own property at Houston's Mill in June 2003 from then on when other council officers researched it Aires de Service became the name that was used, the tourist industry saw it as easily recognisable for continental visitors to our shores and this helped a lot as well with the roll out of Aires on this island. I should mention Broughshane had a Stopover for a time before the proper Aires de Service, and that it was called Stopover the sign is still there but did not enjoy the success that they got once we had the proper Aires de Service established. I don't even know if people even notice the sign, the Raclet unit is easily recognisable though in any language!

Been in France past 2 weeks and the system is fantastic here...... Aire does hit the mark as most motorhome owners or camping car owners as were known here knows exactly what it is...... But one thing that should be universal is the sign......it spells out exactly what it is
