Hundreds of musicians are set to compete in Limavady when the town hosts the County Derry Fleadh for the first time, writes Sheena Jackson. The Roe Valley branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann says the festival, which is a celebration and showcase of traditional Irish music and culture, will be held in the town from 25-28th May 2017. It will be the first time the event has been held in Limavady and will draw musicians and audiences from across the county and further afield. Some of the events include music and dance competitions, traditional sessions, a live concert, street music, and a range of family-orientated events. “Over the course of the weekend people from all over the county, and further afield will flock to Limavady to take part in competitions and attend events, in what is sure to be a fantastic boost for the town,” said a spokesperson. The Fleadh is being organised by the recently formed Jimmy O’Hara CCE who hope that it will be “an opportunity to showcase Limavady’s growing reputation as a cultural hub and give everyone in the area the chance to enjoy and take part in traditional Irish music”. “We are incredibly excited that at long last Limavady will be hosting the County Derry Fleadh, a festival which has the potential to bring a lot of positive benefits for the town and will give all of us the chance to experience the very best of traditional Irish music and culture, right on our own doorstep,” said Eoin O’Hara from Jimmy O’Hara CCE PR Officer. “The Fleadh will also offer the people of Limavady the chance to showcase what a vibrant and energetic place the town is, not just in terms of arts and culture, but also as a unique place to shop, socialise, and visit.” “So far local businesses have been extremely generous in supporting the team as we work to bring the Fleadh to Limavady,” said Mr. O’Hara. As “a community festival”, organisers of the County Derry Fleadh 2017 are encouraging a strong involvement from the local community and say there are plenty of opportunities for people of all backgrounds to take part.
