I'm sure this has been covered before, but does anyone have any suggestions for tank freshener for the grey tank? I have the Thetfords liquid and it's ok, but a bit expensive since I'm using a good drop in the tank over winter when the vans not being used as much. Does anyone know a decent alternative at a reasonable price?

I use Concentrated Formil Biological Washing Liquid in my tanks and it does a good job at keeping things clean and fresh. Very economical.

Rightly or wrongly- I use the same brand as above - in tablet form! Didn't actually like the smell of thetfords chemical, and haven't had a problem with the tablets!

Believe it or not some of the English forum members recommend the use of orange squash, cheap cola has also apparently been effective. However I think these home spun remedies are more about removing odours rather than sterilising and killing bacteria. Has to be worth a try and certainly can do no harm at a very cheap outlay.

In the past we have emptied the tank then added 2 litres of Coke. Drive for a couple of hours and release the tank contents. This should get rid of a lot of what is causing the smells.
Then add the contents of the cheapest supermarket dilutable orange to the tank and forget about it.

I usually break up a handful of Aldi Almat tablets (they are cheap) and throw in a couple of gallons of warm to hot water from the kitchen. Take the motor home for a drive on a twisty road and then dump the water.

For the fresh water tank I have used Zappy's disinfecting tablets as mentioned in Ally's post above. If your interested this is his link
